California bishop to visit Islands

His Emminence Metropolitan Anthony, the ruling bishop of the newly established Greek Orthodox metropolis of San Francisco, will visit Hawai'i from Dec. 31 to Jan. 9.

During his visit, he'll preside over the Jan. 4 liturgy, which will include a cutting of the "vasilopeta" (that's Greek for the sweet bread of St. Basil), officiate at epiphany service on Jan. 6 with the Rev. Dr. Nicholas V. Gamvas and participate in other events.

The metropolitan, who was born in Crete, studied at the Yale Divinity School and University of Chicago. He was elevated as titular bishop of Amissos by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He was consecrated May 21, 1978, at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Cathedral in New York City, then was given the responsibility of the Eighth Archdiocesan District in Denver, before later taking on his current role.
