BYU-Hawai'i basketball rallies past Baylor, 72-67

Shawn Opunui scored 34 points and Jake Chrisman added 20 as Brigham Young-Hawai'i rallied to beat Baylor, 72-67, last night in the BYU-Hawai'i Surf 'N Slam Classic at Cannon Activities Center.

Opunui was 10 of 14 from the field, including 6 of 8 from 3-point range, for NCAA Division II BYUH (7-2), which trailed 35-23 at halftime. He also made all eight of his free-throw attempts.

R.T. Guinn scored 18 points to lead Baylor of the NCAA Division I Big 12 Conference.

In the first game, San Jose State (4-3) defeated Northern Illinois (4-4), 53-41.



Chaminade falls on road: Cal State Bakersfield held visiting Chaminade to 12 first-half points and rolled to a 67-46 victory last night at the State Farm Roadrunner Classic.

Eddie Shelby scored 14 points for Bakersfield, which went on a 28-5 run in the first half, and took a 35-12 lead at halftime.

Roy Stigall and Nick Frey led the Silverswords with nine points apiece.

Bakersfield improved to 5-0, and Chaminade fell to 1-5.

Bakersfield will face Lewis in today's championship game, while Chaminade will play for the consolation title against Fort Lewis.

• Sugai a scholar: University of Hawai'i midfielder Joelle Sugai was named to the 2003 All-West Region Scholar third team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American/adidas.

The junior from 'Aiea is a two-time UH scholar athlete and 2002 Academic All-Western Athletic Conference selection.

She also was named second-team all-WAC and was one of three UH players to start all 20 matches this season.
