Toys For Tots being accepted

Toys For Tots will accept new, unwrapped Christmas presents for needy children at the Salvation Army Toys For Tots Warehouse at 556 Reed Lane, between South and Punchbowl streets near Restaurant Row.

People can drop off presents between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Other locations that will accept presents include the Children's Discovery Center in Kaka'ako, Longs Drug Stores, Bank of Hawaii and Subway restaurants on O'ahu.

For more information, contact Marine Gunnery Sgt. Richard Stampp at 257-2758, Ext. 233.

Kaimuki tries valet parking

To help ease the tight parking situation in Kaimuki during the holidays, merchants are offering valet parking from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Dec. 26.

The valet service costs $3, but seven merchants have agreed to validate, making the parking free.

"The parking situation is so desperate up in this area," said D.J. Colbert, owner of Prosperity Corner. "We have great stores and restaurants and not enough places to park. With valet they don't have to worry about running out and putting money in the meter or getting a $35 ticket."

The valet drop-off is at the municipal lot near Harding Avenue; large signs point out the spot. Parking attendants keep watch over the cars while drivers shop, Colbert said.

If the project is a success, it could become permanent, she said.

NEIGHBOR ISLAND

Public's aid sought in probe

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police are again asking for the public's help in an investigation of a bicycle-auto collision on May 25 that killed one of the contestants in the Keauhou-Kona Triathlon.

Wayne Scrimshaw, of Kailua, Kona, died the day after the collision on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway near the 84-mile marker in Ka'upulehu, North Kona.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers investigating the crash have received differing versions of the incident.

On behalf of the family and friends of Wayne Scrimshaw, police are again asking anyone with information about the incident to call Sgt. Leroy Victorino at 961-2332 in Hilo, or at 326-4277 in Kona, or to call the police nonemergency number at 935-3311.

Work starts on school project

Workers will start painting the outside of the band and art building at Kalanianaole Elementary School on the Big Island tomorrow in the first part of a school improvement project from the Hawai'i 3R's program.

The interior of the Kalanianaole cafeteria building will be repainted this spring.

Hawai'i 3R's, which stands for repair, remodel and restore, is a nonprofit program that helps schools with routine repair and maintenance projects.
