Iolani beats Florida's No. 1; Oak Hill wins Classic

Two-time defending state champion Iolani defeated Florida's No. 1-ranked boys basketball team, Dr. Phillips (Orlando), 76-64, yesterday to claim seventh place in the 16-team Iolani Prep Classic.

The Raiders (9-2) got a game-high 26 points from junior Kyle Pape and 21 points from senior Derrick Low to race past the Panthers, who entered the tournament at 4-0 but now stand at 5-3.

On Dec. 1, Dr. Phillips defeated Edgewater (Orlando), USA Today's No. 9-ranked team at the time, 80-66. Edgewater had been ranked No. 1 in the state by the Florida Sports Writers Association, but the Panthers replaced them as No. 1 after the upset.

"We played exceptionally well against Edgewater, and we're still trying to capture that in a bottle," Panthers coach Anthony Long said. "For whatever reason, we didn't play like we are capable of today, but give Iolani credit because they played well and had a lot to do with that. Iolani is a very good squad; if you have any kind of defensive breakdown, they're such good shooters, they penalize you for being even one second late. They killed us with that."

The main weapon was Pape, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard who was held to one point in Friday's 66-51 loss to Fairley (Memphis, Tenn.). Pape was 0-for-6 from the field on Friday but went 9 for 13 yesterday.

"(Friday) was terrible, but everybody has an off night and you just have to rebound," Pape said. "I was thinking about it (Friday) night but then I decided to forget about it and move on. Teamwork is big for us, so every game we can have a different high-point man. It all starts with screens and passes, and we had good timing tonight."

The Raiders led only 29-25 at halftime but began the third period with an 11-2 run to go up 40-27. Pape scored on two backdoor layups and a jumper in that stretch, then split two defenders and sank a left-handed scoop shot to give Iolani a 50-37 lead with 1:25 left in the quarter.

The Raiders then began the final period with a 7-2 run and held off Dr. Phillips the rest of the way. Iolani made 16 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter and 27 of 31 (87.1 percent) for the game.

"When Iolani gets a lead on you, that's when they're dangerous because they can control the tempo," Long said. "In Orlando, they could compete with all the teams in the upper echelon. They'd be a good team in Orlando, and they'd be a good team any place on the Mainland because they execute so well."

Jason Rich, a 6-foot-3 guard who signed with Florida State, led the Panthers with 24 points.

Rajon Rondo scored 25 points and dished out 10 assists and Josh Smith added 23 points, eight rebounds and five blocks to lead Oak Hill (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) — ranked No. 1 in virtually every national poll — to a 73-55 win over Mount Vernon of New York (ranked No. 14 by USA Today).

Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said the 6-foot-8 Josh Smith, who has signed with Indiana, has "a 50/50 chance" of entering next June's NBA draft.
