DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Travis LaBoy

  • Defensive end
  • 6-4, 254 pounds, Senior
  • 2003 statistics: 13 sacks, 22 tackles for losses

"I'm definitely surprised. It's mostly due to my teammates. I can't do it by myself. The d-tackles, defensive ends, linebackers, secondary with the coverage ... it was a whole team effort, and I'm thankful for it."

• • •

Kelvin Millhouse Jr.

  • First team
  • Cornerback
  • 6-1, 206, Senior
  • 2003 statistics: 8 pass breakups, 2 pass interceptions

He rejected UH's scholarship offer as a high school senior because he didn't want to play receiver in college. After a year at a junior college, he joined UH as a sophomore.

"When your heart says something, you should do it. I knew I would be a better college cornerback than a college receiver. I think I made the right decision."

• • •

Hyrum Peters

  • First team
  • Strong safety
  • 5-8, 190 pounds, Senior
  • 2003 statistics: 88 tackles, 10 pass breakups

"I'm happy to achieve one of my goals."

• • •

Samson Satele

  • Second team
  • Offensive line
  • 6-3, 289 pounds, Freshman

"Coach always says 'work hard and good things will happen,' I think I proved that. Second team is nice."

• • •

Isa'ako Sopoaga

  • First team
  • Defensive tackle
  • 6-3, 336 pounds, Senior
  • 2003 statistics: 51 tackles, 8 for losses, 4 sacks

"I didn't expect to be on the first team. "I'm happy for it."

• • •

Chad Owens

  • First team
  • Slotback
  • 5-9, 174, Junior
  • 2003 statistics: 85 catches, 1,134 yards, 9 TDs

"It's a credit to my teammates and coaches. It's pretty awesome. I don't know what to say other than it was a great season and I had fun."

"If it wasn't for the O-line blocking for (quarterback) Timmy (Chang), I wouldn't get the ball. If it wasn't for Isaac drawing double teams, Travis might not always get in there. It's the next guy who always helps you out."
