SHOW BIZ
Tom Selleck churning out made-for-TV films

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

ON THE GO: Tom Selleck is emerging as the king of TV movies, filming globally. Earlier this year, he completed a CBS movie, "Twelve Mile Road," in Calgary, Canada; more recently, he wound up in "Reversible Errors," a CBS mini-series, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Next up: "90 Days to Thunder," a film for A&E about the 60th anniversary of D-Day. Also involved in all three projects: his "Magnum, P.I."-era makeup man, localite Lon Bentley. And nope, Selleck's not been asked to participate in the big-screen version of "Magnum, P.I.," though he's heard the buzz. ...

Randy Smith, who is known for his Frank Sinatra tribute act, has bought a home in Denver, Colo., so it appears that he's going to pass on Hawai'i as his ongoing venue for Ol' Blue Eyes music. He had agreed to do Jack Cione's "Mardi Gras" show at Pearl Harbor in February, so that may be up in the air now. ...

Yvonne Elliman joins Tino and the Rhythm Klub for a one-nighter, from 9 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Hilton Waikoloa Village's Grand Ballroom. Elliman will do her signature hits, which Tino and crew are learning, but she's producing an acoustic moment when she'll share some of her new compositions. Tickets: $40 adults, $25 children. Call (808) 886-1234, Ext. 54. And because Tino and the Rhythm Klub will perform New Year's Eve at the Mauna Lani Bay Resort on the Big Island, their slot at the Sheraton Waikiki poolside that evening will be filled by Aura. ...

BOOK 'EM: April Masini, the TV maven ("Baywatch Hawai'i," "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," "Miss Universe") has turned author, with a dating guide titled "For Men Only." Her premise: Can an average Joe become a "chick magnet" to woo beautiful women? Masini tells what motivates women — theory being, if you're a guy and know these tips, dating is easier. ...

DeSoto Brown's "Hawai'i at Play: Images of a Bygone Era" (Watermark Publishing, $19.95), is a joyous read — a liberally illustrated collection of matchbooks, menus, postcards, posters, rack cards and print ads that evoke images of kinder, gentler, even innocent times. Many of the landmarks are long gone: Kewalo Inn, Coco's, Oasis, Trader Vic's, The Tropics, La Ronde, Kodak Hula Shows, Tahitian Lanai, M's Ranch House, Liberty Theatre. But the memories remain. And oh, the images of Joan Crawford on a Show Parade handbill; Bing Crosby in front of the Waikiki Theatre, Maurice Chevalier on a Hawai'i Theatre playbill. A great book to give — or receive — at Christmas. ...

You've heard about "Christmas Talk Story" (Bess Press, $14.95), the CD-with-book venture that offers print stories performed by Honolulu Theatre for Youth-Kumu Kahua actors, reflecting anecdotal holiday remembrances by local writers. See the show, buy the book, listen to the CD — and tingle all the way. ...

"The Hawai'i's Kitchen Cookbook" (Watermark, $10), inspired by the KHON-2 show hosted by Brickwood Galuteria, assembles recipes from an all-star team of Hawai'i's kitchen magicians, ranging from Alan Wong to Chai Chaowasaree, from D.K. Kodama to George Mavrothalassitis, from Russell Siu to Beverly Gannon. ...

BITS 'N' PIECES: If there's a glowing lilt in his radio voice these days, could be it's because Larry Price has taken a bride — the former May Kawawaki. A reception was held at the Halekulani Hotel, where a cardinal gave his blessing. Well, Frank DeLima, anyway — appearing in his Cardinal Vermicelli robes. ...

And away we go: Pat Sajak of "Wheel of Fortune" returns to Hawai'i next year to join Army buddy Joe Moore of KHON-2 in a Manoa Valley Theatre benefit of "The Honeymooners," in which Sajak will play Ed Norton and Moore will appear as Ralph Kramden. ...

And that's Show Biz. ...
