The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i is planning its biggest celebration since its opening nearly 10 years ago with a New Year's 'Ohana Festival, set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 11 at the center and adjacent Mo'ili'ili Field.

Admission is free for the event, which has the theme "Celebrating the Multicultural Traditions of Hawai'i."

Restaurants will prepare foods representing various ethnic groups, and cultural demonstrations and entertainment will be featured. A craft area offering works by local artists and keiki make-and-take activities also are planned, along with rides for the children.

Parking is available at the center and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa parking structure. Trolleys to and from the UH parking structure will run throughout the day.

The festival's entertainment lineup will include martial arts demonstrations in the center's dojo. Among the cultural performers are: Hawai'i Matsuri Taiko, a Japanese drumming group; the Young Okinawans of Hawai'i; Myong Woo Dahn, a Korean dance and drum group; the Caledonian Society of Hawai'i, the Celtic Pipes and Drums of Hawai'i; and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.
