VEIKUNE

Campbell High defensive end David Veikune said yesterday that he has verbally committed to play football at the University of Colorado.

Veikune, who is 6 feet 3 and 270 pounds, was an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division first-team all-star.

"The coaches were friendly, the campus was nice and (the school) can give me a solid education," Veikune said.

Veikune said former Saint Louis School star Brian Cabral, assistant head coach to head coach Gary Barnett at Colorado, was his primary contact. Cabral was here in recent weeks for recruiting purposes.

Veikune said he also liked the athletic facilities and liked that the school was rebuilding its weight room.

Campbell coach Tumoana Kenessey said Colorado is getting a player with a good work ethic and good attitude.

"He plays hard on every down, has a great first step (off the snap)," Kenessey said. "He's very coachable and he listens."

Veikune has the minimum qualifications to play as a freshman because of his 950 SAT score and 3.5 cumulative grade point average. He said he wants to major in computer science.

NCAA rules prohibit coaches from commenting on recruits until after the school receives the national letter of intent. The first day football recruits can sign their letters is Feb. 4.

Veikune made his official recruiting trip to Colorado the weekend of Dec. 4-7.

Veikune said Utah and Hawai'i also showed interest, but neither had offered an official recruiting trip or scholarship. He said he was disappointed that UH didn't approach him until last Friday.

"I wasn't contacted during the season about going down to the stadium like my cousin (Mapa Malupo, who played at Campbell last year)," Veikune said.

During the UH football season, prospective recruits are invited by UH to Warriors home games at Aloha Stadium. They get to stand on the field during pregame warmups before being seated in the stands behind the UH bench.

Veikune is the second Hawai'i player to verbally commit to Colorado. During the summer, Waimea running back Jordon Dizon told The Advertiser he was going to accept a scholarship offer to Colorado.
