Pacific Islanders scholarship offered

Pacific Islanders in Communication is offering scholarships of up to $5,000 to students pursuing degrees in media or communications for the 2004-05 academic year .

Applicants must be at least 18; a citizen, legal permanent resident or national of the United States or its territories; demonstrate academic proficiency or have experience in media or communications; show a commitment to the Pacific Islander community; and demonstrate financial need.

No set number of scholarships will be awarded; the number depends on money available. Last year, five scholarships of $2,000 each were given.

People of Pacific island ancestry are encouraged to apply, particularly the descendants of the indigenous peoples of Hawai'i, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Marianas and other Pacific islands.

Pacific Islanders in Communication is a nonprofit organization that supports the development of programming by and about Pacific Islanders.

HPU sponsoring essay contest

High school juniors and seniors who have something to say about a political or social event that has shaped Hawai'i's history are invited to compete in an essay contest sponsored by Hawai'i Pacific University.

Students are asked to explain the relevance of the historic event on the understanding and complexity of life in the Islands today.

The essays have to be typed in double-spaced format and be no more than five pages.

The winner will receive $500 cash and a 75-percent tuition-waiver scholarship.

The second-place finisher will receive $300 cash and a 50-percent tuition waiver, and the third-place finisher will get $200 and a 25-percent tuition waiver.

The deadline is Jan. 16.

An awards ceremony will be held March 14 at the Hawai'i Prince Hotel.

Seminars on arts set for teachers

Elementary-school teachers who want to learn how to use art in their curriculum can attend workshops on Kaua'i and the Big Island next year.

The workshops, sponsored by the Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education and the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, will help teachers use the arts when teaching math, language arts, science and social studies.

The workshops are $15 each. Teachers can get two professional development credits from the state Department of Education by participating in three workshops and developing a learning-results portfolio.

On Kaua'i, workshops are scheduled Jan. 17, Jan. 24, Feb. 7 and April 17 at Kapa'a Elementary School.

On the Big Island, workshops are scheduled Jan. 24, Feb. 7, March 6 and April 24 at the Hawai'i District Office Annex in Hilo.

Registration deadline is Jan. 10.

Workshops scheduled on O'ahu are filled.
