Society salutes animal lovers

The Hawaiian Humane Society recently presented its 2003 awards honoring organizations and people who championed the cause of animals.

The Chairperson's Award was presented to The Ellen M. Koenig Memorial Fund for its support of humane education, adoptions and pet identification programs.

The Helen Kinau Wilder Friendship Awards, named after the Hawaiian Humane Society's founder, went to:

  • Tom Cesar, who risked his own safety to save a kitten stranded in heavy traffic.
  • CrimeStoppers for creating the Animal CrimeStoppers program, which helps solve cruelty cases.
  • Steve Van Ribbink, who tried to protect a dog that was being drowned by its owner.


Modular Space helps nonprofits

The Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and Hawai'i Children's Cancer Foundation have been selected to receive the Hawaii Modular Space Makana Hui award.

Hawaii Modular Space Inc. employees have a charity committee that selects two to three major nonprofit organizations for contributions each year. Recipients receive $2,500 to $4,500.

"Our goal was for employees to really look at their communities and think critically about which programs support their values," said Hawaii Modular Space president Mike Fox. "A recurring theme is the well-being of our children."

Employees identified the following nonprofit groups to receive $100 Makana Hui awards: UH-Hilo women's volleyball team, Institute for Human Services, Pearl City High School athletic department, Kapolei Middle School C-SAP Program and the Lokahi Foundation.


Maui water official honored

Maui County Department of Water Supply administrative officer Jackalyn "Jacky" Takakura has been honored by the Hawai'i Water Works Association with the William Y. Thompson Award.

Department director George Tengan said Takakura deserved special recognition for dedication and professionalism.

Takakura has launched a program to provide informational inserts in customers' water bills, visited schools, and made presentations on conservation and water-quality issues. She also conducts field trips and facility tours, and created a quarterly newsletter, "The Pipeline."


Volunteer leader of year named

Jennifer Barrett was recently selected as 2003 Outstanding Volunteer Leader of the Year for the Network of Volunteer Leaders.

Barrett is the volunteer coordinator for the Hanauma Bay Education Program. She has developed a newsletter for volunteers and holds events for volunteers such as potluck dinners and night snorkeling.
