THE LEFT LANE
Heartfelt resolution

Advertiser Staff and News Services

If you're looking for a New Year's resolution, how about a pledge to live a healthier lifestyle? It's not a promise to lose 20 pounds, but more of a vow to make small changes that add up to something big.

It's also a national campaign. Promoters of LifeWise Heart Truth Pledge are asking women especially to promise one change each month to improve their heart health and reduce their risk for heart disease. Participants can sign up free at www.lifewiseonline.com for motivational tips and advice about healthy habits.

Will think for food

The average house cat has two main problems: obesity and boredom. Left alone in the house all day, cats rarely engage their instincts to hunt, explore, play and socialize. Instead, they obsess on food ... and sleep.

Here's a toy that can help. Peek a Prize appeals to a cat's instincts and curiosity when play with humans isn't possible. The wood box allows smart cats to "capture" toys by fishing them out of strategically placed pukas. For food-motivated felines, treats can be dropped into the box to be retrieved.

Peek a Prize is available at www.esmartcat.com or (866) 317-6278. It sells for $26.95 plus shipping and handling.

Once-popular game attempting comeback

If you know your Pinky Tuscadero from your Leather Tuscadero, your "Man from Atlantis" from your "Manimal," your "Leatherface" from your "Pumpkinhead," you'll rule at the new DVD Pop Culture Edition of Trivial Pursuit.

Hasbro has updated the once wildly popular board game with visual clues from a DVD. The game ($35) comes with 2,400 card questions and 600 DVD questions. Categories include television, movies, music, sports/ games, buzz and fads.

Pop-culture freaks will remember that Trivial Pursuit revitalized the market for board games when it was launched in 1982.

Paddlers get pinned

Bill Pratt, pinup?

The real estate agent and Hawai'i member of Team New Zealand/Hawai'i appears as the October beefcake in "The Men of Hawaiian Outrigger

Canoe Racing" 2004 calendar, which went on sale at the state championship regatta earlier this year.

Available at paddling shops on O'ahu, the calendar lists accomplishments of some of the state's top male paddlers, including John Foti, Walter Guild, Karel Tresnak Jr. and Kai Bartlett. It has a daily tide chart and schedule of paddling races. Part of the $4.99 proceeds go to Kai Makana, an ocean education program.
