Tobacco alliance chooses director

Deborah Zysman is the new director of the Coalition for a Tobacco Free Hawai'i. The nonprofit association of more than 140 organizations, businesses and individuals works to reduce tobacco use and its harmful effects in Hawai'i.

Zysman was most recently a community health specialist with the Regional Center for Healthy Communities in Boston, where she guided community groups in developing community-focused strategies for substance abuse prevention.


Conservation group picks chief

The Conservation Council for Hawai'i has hired as its executive director Marjorie Ziegler, a long-time environmental activist formerly with Earthjustice and KAHEA: The Hawaiian Environmental Alliance.

CCH, dedicated to the protection of Hawai'i's native species and their habits, is the Hawai'i affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation.

CCH also elected officers and directors for 2003-2004: Helene Takemoto, president; Mashuri Waite, vice president; Victoria Newberry, treasurer; Lasha Salbosa, secretary.

Other directors are Michael Bailey, David Boynton, David Hill, Nelson Ho, Julie Leialoha, Warren Onishi, Tlaloc Tokuda and Masako Cordray Westcott.


Rotary Clubs join for repair project

The Rotary Clubs of Pearl Harbor and West Honolulu took part recently in a joint service project repairing a severely degraded walkway at Kokua Kalihi Valley Elder Center.

Each organization contributed $1,000 toward the project. A Rotary Centennial plaque was placed at the site acknowledging both clubs.
