Honolulu plans DUI checkpointsHonolulu police will set up DUI checkpoints at unannounced times and locations through the New Year's weekend.
Police had arrested 31 men and three women on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant from last Wednesday through early today. Twenty-three of the arrests occurred in the metropolitan Honolulu patrol district.
From January through November, police arrested 2,069 people for driving under the influence as compared to 2,017 arrests for the same period in 2002, said HPD spokeswoman Jean Motoyama.
Rescuers spot missing swimmer
Fire rescue specialists today rescued a 23-year-old man from waters between the Lanai Lookout and Hanauma Bay, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada said.
The man was reported missing at 1:45 a.m. by his girlfriend, who said he went swimming at Sandy Beach. Firefighters searched until 4:15 a.m. The search resumed at dawn. HFD's helicopter spotted the man about a half-mile offshore at 8:15 a.m.
The man was exhausted but not injured, Tejada said.
Man charged in knife attack
A 30-year-old man was charged yesterday with attempted murder and two counts of second-degree assault for allegedly attacking three people with a kitchen knife Sunday.
William Dewitt is accused of repeatedly stabbing his girlfriend, 32, at her Ho'omalolo Street home in Pearl City. The woman was in critical but stable condition, police said. The woman's brother was stabbed in the back and her mother, 55, suffered cuts to her hands.
Stolen car, credit cards recovered
Police recovered a car and credit cards stolen in a recent burglary at a DUI checkpoint yesterday morning at Palamea and Olomea streets in Kalihi.
Three men and a woman were arrested by police, who stopped their car at 12:10 a.m.
Arrested were an 'Ewa Beach man, 29, on suspicion of auto theft; a man, 26, from 'Ewa for alleged possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia; and a Waipahu man, 29, for allegedly possessing stolen credit cards. All were booked and released pending further investigation. The 'Ewa Beach man and woman, 18, were sent to District Court today for outstanding warrants.
Humane Society officer rescued
Firefighters today were called to rescue a Hawaiian Humane Society officer who was stranded about a half-mile above Lyon Arboretum in Manoa.
Fire officials said the man had been tracking a dog in the area but then could not make his way back because of the wet weather.
A fire helicopter was assisting in the rescue at 11:30 a.m.
Victim identified in Kona fatality
HILO, Hawai'i Police identified the victim of a fatal car crash Saturday on the Hawai'i Belt Road as Robert Marion Haile, 40, of Ho noka'a.
Police said Haile was driving toward Waimea at about 8:30 pm. when his car ran off the road near the 21-mile marker in Pu'uanahulu, North Kona. The car overturned and plunged down an 80-foot embankment. Haile was pronounced dead about five hours later at Kona Community Hospital.
