NEIGHBOR ISLANDS

Gusts cut off power on Big Island

Big Island gusts up to 60 mph on Monday played havoc with Hawaii Electric Light Co. power lines in South Kona, Ka'u and Hamakua.

HELCO spokesman Jay Ignacio reported that service to more than 5,000 customers was disrupted from 6:19 Monday night through yesterday morning. Some of the disruptions, however, lasted only five seconds, said Ignacio.

The most affected area was along Highway 11 in South Kona, where winds caused trees to fall on power lines, said Ignacio.

About 3,500 customers from Pahala to Hawaiian Ocean View Estates were without power from two to six hours.

Lihu'e heliport to be upgraded

Lihu'e Airport's heliport is getting a face lift.

Gov. Linda Lingle announced yesterday that $5,483,000 will go toward improvements including the constructions of lot on which tenants can build hangars, maintenance facilities, offices and ticketing areas.

The existing heliport facility does not have convenient spaces for such support facilities.

The money will be used for paved parking and installation of water, sewer, and electrical lines for heliport operators close to the takeoff and landing pads.

The improvements also are designed to make heliport businesses more accessible from Ahukini Road.

O'AHU'S NORTH SHORE

City postpones People's Market

The city's planned opening of the first People's Open Market on the North Shore has been postponed, and no new opening date has been set. The market, which would be the 26th in the city program, was to open Jan. 6 at the Sunset Beach Support Park.

The open markets, which began in 1973, provide low-cost, fresh produce and other locally grown products by independent vendors.
