Iolani beats Kamehameha, 61-38

Advertiser Staff

Ryan Hirata scored 15 points last night and Derrick Low added 14 as the Iolani School boys basketball team defeated Kamehameha, 61-38, for the Punahou Holiday Classic championship.

The two-time defending state champion Raiders (14-2) have not lost to another Hawai'i team since Dec. 8, 2001, when Kalaheo beat them in the title game of the Jim Alegre Invitational at Radford.

Their only losses since then were to Fairfax (Los Angeles) twice, Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.) and Fairley (Memphis, Tenn.) in the Iolani Prep Classic, plus a five-overtime loss at a tournament in Boston.

Kamehameha jumped to an 8-0 lead last night and led 17-16 early in the second period, but Hirata and Low combined to score 12 straight points to put Iolani up 28-17.

The Raiders then began the second half with a 14-4 run, and Low's 3-pointer made it 44-25 midway through the quarter.
