HPU edges Southwestern

Aaron Abrams hit a 10-footer from the left baseline with 3 seconds remaining as Hawai'i Pacific edged Southwestern (Kan.), 71-70, last night at Mid-Pacific Institute gym.

The Sea Warriors (3-8) led by 10 points with 2:30 remaining, but Southwestern rallied to take a 70-69 lead with 19 seconds left.

Southwestern (5-8) couldn't get a shot off after Abrams' basket.

Albert Tecul scored 17 points to lead HPU, while Abrams added 11 and Marvin Noble 10.

Brett Annis scored 14 points to lead four Southwestern players in double figures.

Earlier yesterday, Noble earned Pacific West Conference Player of the Week honors for his performance in Sunday's 81-68 victory over Doane College (Neb.).

He scored a game-high 23 points and was 10 of 10 from the free-throw line. He had five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

• Chaminade ends losing streak: Nick Frey had 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Roy Stigall added 16 points as Chaminade beat Chapman (Calif.), 74-56, last night at McCabe Gym.

Chaminade (2-6) ended a six-game losing streak since a season-opening win over Villanova.

Chapman fell to 5-6.
