Waipahu woman killed while crossing highway

By Karen Blakeman

A 41-year-old Waipahu woman was killed today while crossing Farrington Highway in front of Leeward Community College.

Honolulu Police Sgt. William Baldwin of the traffic investigations unit said the woman had just gotten off the bus at the marked bus stop in front of the college at shortly after 1 p.m.

She apparently saw the 1988 Acura approaching in the far lane as she prepared to cross Farrington Highway, Baldwin said, but decided to try to beat the car.

The woman ran diagonally across the street, outside of the crosswalk.

The Acura was driven by a 22-year-old woman with a man and two infants in the car. She tried to avoid the pedestrian, Baldwin said, but the woman in the street ran in front of the car.

The woman was pronounced dead at Kapi'olani Medical Center at Pali Momi.
