Architect wins contest with 'wild guess'

Advertiser Staff

 •  COMING TOMORROW

In the Sunday Business section, read why some key state decision-makers don't care who wins the Pro Bowl; they just want to make sure the state gets back its $5 million investment in the sports event.

Honolulu's Richard Yoneshige, 58, an architect for the Navy, won The Honolulu Advertiser's Pro Bowl giveaway, relying on a familiar number for the victory.

Contestants were asked to pick the winner of the Super Bowl from the four remaining playoff teams and the total points scored in the Super Bowl.

Yoneshige, who submitted just one newspaper ballot, picked Tampa Bay and 69 points. Tampa Bay defeated Oakland, 48-21.

"My work phone number ends with a 69 and my good friend's phone number also ends in 69. Even my home phone number ends in 69. Ironically, it just turned out that way," said Yoneshige.

"It was just a wild guess. My gut feeling was that it wouldn't be that high scoring," he said.

But Yoneshige figured others would be thinking the same way and felt he would have a better chance if he went the opposite way.

Another contestant — Colin Chock — also picked Tampa Bay and 69 total points. But Yoneshige's ballot was picked in a random drawing of the two.

Yoneshige wins a round of golf for two at Waialae Country Club with an NFL celebrity, as well as two tickets to the Pro Bowl and the Pro Bowl Tailgate party.

Chock wins a leather NFL golf bag and 60 NFL golf balls. Third-place winner, James Baginski (Tampa Bay, 63), wins an NFL putter and 40 NFL golf balls.

Live on TV: The NFL yesterday lifted the blackout and tomorrow's Pro Bowl game will be televised live in Hawai'i.

A few tickets remain for the 12:30 p.m. game, which will be televised on KITV (channel 4, cable 6).

Maeda honored: The NFL has selected Castle High School's Nelson Maeda as its 2003 Hawai'i High School Coach of the Year.

Maeda, who led the Knights to the state championship against Saint Louis, will be honored during a pregame ceremony prior to tomorrow's Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium.

The NFL will provide Maeda with a trophy, $2,500 in cash for his football program, and an all-expenses paid trip to attend the NFL's annual High School Coaches Summit during Hall of Fame Weekend in Canton, Ohio, in July.

Maeda was The Advertiser's co-Coach of the Year on the all-state football team.

The two previous winners of this award were Saint Louis School's Cal Lee (2002) and Kahuku High School's Siuaki Livai (2001).

Brooks autograph session: All-pro linebacker Derrick Brooks of the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers will sign autographs from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. today at Macy's Ala Moana, men's department level one.

Also on hand will be Pro Bowl cheerleaders Nicole Dupler of the San Francisco 49ers and Courtney Paige Jarrett of the Baltimore Ravens. Mascots of the 49ers and Broncos also will be on hand.

Fine mess: Receiver Terrell Owens of the 49ers and defensive end Simeon Rice of the Buccaneers were fined $4,000 apiece for missing a team meeting and practice, according to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy.
