Foyle scores 40 as BYUH tops Hilo in basketball

All-American Alexus Foyle scored a career-high 40 points as the Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's basketball team defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 101-95, last night at the Cannon Activities Center in La'ie to claim sole possession of first place in the PacWest Conference.

Foyle joins David Evans and Wayne Keys as the only Seasiders to score 40 or more points in a game.

BYUH improved to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the PacWest. Hilo fell to 12-6 and 4-2.

Spencer Lynn scored 17 points, Beau Nobmann added 15 and Shawn Opunui 10 for the Seasiders, who led 53-41 at halftime and shot 56.7 percent from the field.

For the Vulcans, Brady Hyde scored a team-high 19 points, Ryan Abrahams had 16, Kyle Bartholomew added 13 and Osadonor Esene 11.

BASEBALL

Santa Clara sweeps Hilo: Joe Diefenderfer, Michael Thompson, Scott Shapiro and Michael Lange each drove in two runs as Santa Clara beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 13-2, to sweep a doubleheader yesterday at Wong Stadium.

Winner John Redmond gave up two hits over five innings, and Andrew Slorp pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

In the first game, Jack Headley scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch and Matt McColgan singled in Jason Matteucci with an insurance run as Santa Clara won, 8-6.

Patrick Overholt picked up the win by giving up an unearned run in 3á innings of relief.

Santa Clara's Ryan Pierpont batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Kaliko Oligo and Ernie Carvalho both batted 3-for-5 for Hilo.

Santa Clara improved to 2-2, while Hilo dropped to 2-12.
