Get tax help by phone

The IRS provides free telephone and Web site help for taxpayers preparing their returns.

• (800) 829-1040 is the IRS tax help line for individuals wanting answers to federal tax questions.

• (800) 829-3676 is the number for tax forms and instructions.

• Refund Hotline at (800) 829-1954 provides current-year refund information.

• Business and Specialty Tax Line is (800) 829-4933. Businesses can apply for a new employer identification number and get help with employment, partnership, corporation, estate, gift, trust and excise taxes, and issues related to federal tax deposits.

• Automated services at these numbers are available 24 hours a day. IRS representatives are available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays.

• The (800) 829-1040 customer service line is also available on Saturdays through April 12 and on Sunday, April 13.

• IRS TeleTax number, (800) 829-4477, provides recorded messages covering more than 100 tax topics. You can also check the status of your income tax refund. You will need your Social Security number (the first one listed on the return if you filed a joint return), filing status and dollar amount of the expected refund. The automated refund information is generally available four to five weeks after filing.

• Hearing-impaired people with access to TTY/TDD equipment can call (800) 829-4059 to ask questions or order forms and publications.

• Twenty-four hour help is also available at the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov.
