A 17-year-old girl and a man in his 20s were killed and six people injured last night in Waimanalo when a pickup loaded with passengers hit a utility pole off Kalaniana'ole Highway.

Shortly after 7 p.m., four men were taken to The Queen's Medical Center, according to Emergency Medical Center paramedics. One was in critical condition, and the other three were in guarded condition.

A man and a woman were taken to Castle Medical Center, where they were listed in guarded condition.

The 17-year-old girl and the man in his 20s died at the scene.

Police continued to investigate late into the evening and further details were not available, including the cause of the accident. But authorities said it appeared that the truck may have been trying to pass on the right.

Witnesses said the truck was Makapu'u-bound before crashing near Bell Street and Kaiona Beach Park.

Fire Department paramedics also were called to the scene, HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada said.

Police closed all lanes of Kalaniana'ole Highway while they investigated.
