Iolani beats Kamehameha in basketball, 57-47

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Bobby Nash scored a season-high 25 points last night to lead the unbeaten Iolani School boys basketball team to a 57-47 home victory over Kamehameha in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu contest.

Nash made 11 of 13 field goals, missing only a 3-point shot in the first half and a dunk in the second, as the Raiders (10-0) took a 14-2 first-period lead and never led by fewer than nine points thereafter.

"Shooting-wise, this was his best game ever," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.

The performance was especially impressive considering Nash still was shaking off flu symptoms from the night before. He said he had a temperature of 99.6 on Friday and gulped down Nyquil to get through the night.

Last night, he made the Warriors defense sick. Nash's hot hand was most timely in the first half, when all-state teammate Derrick Low was held to two points. Iolani's other starting guard, Ryan Hirata, was still shaking off a cold himself and had only one field goal in the first half.

"My shot definitely was there," Nash said. "My teammates fed me the ball, and if our big gun isn't going too well, then somebody else has to step up. That's what you have to do."

The Raiders jumped out to an 8-0 lead on Nash's 3-pointer, a jumper by Low and Hirata's 3-pointer.

Kamehameha (7-3) closed it to 24-15 at the half, but the Raiders started the third period with a 10-0 run to take command.

The Warriors never got closer than the final margin.

Kamehameha assistant coach Cavan Scanlan said the Raiders' defense also played a big role with their pressure that extended to near half court.

"Their ball-pressure, the way they extended their 'D,' there's nobody else in the state that can do it like they do," Scanlan said. "It's like college pressure."
