University High wins small-school ILH title in softball

Kuulei Padeken hit a two-run double, scoring Richie-Ann Titcomb and Mandy Yoshizu for the go-ahead runs in the top of the 15th inning as University High clinched the Interscholastic League of Honolulu small-school softball championship with a 3-1 victory over Hawai'i Baptist/St. Andrew's/St. Francis yesterday at Kamamalu Field.

Yoshizu also finished the game for University High, striking out two batters and inducing a ground out.

Jessica Ghizaldi faced 47 batters, allowing one run on seven hits, striking out seven and walking one.

• KAMEHAMEHA 10, MID-PACIFIC 0: Kate Robinson and Brandi Peiler combined on a six-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the host Warriors beat the Owls.

Robinson pitched the first five innings and struck out nine. She lost her perfect game after walking a batter in the fifth.

Peiler pitched the sixth and struck out two.

Peiler hit a two-run homer in the first and Robinson hit a three-run shot in the sixth.

SWIMMING

• Kapolei's Egloria sets marks: Kapolei freshman Meredith Egloria obliterated two meet records yesterday at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association junior varsity championship meet at Kalani High.

Egloria won the 100-yard freestyle in 53.78 seconds, more than a second faster than the record set four years ago by Kaiser's Ashley Swart, now a star at University of San Diego. Later Egloria set a record of 1:00.67 in the 100 backstroke, almost 2 1/2 seconds faster than the record set last season by Pearl City's Elisha Yee.

Kalani won its first boys team championship, beating out Kaiser 88 to 75 1/2 and Kaiser outscored Mililani 113 to 103 for the girls title.

The OIA divisional varsity championships will be next weekend, West on Friday and East on Saturday.
