GEORGE KAHAUNANI O MAUNAKEA APUNA, 94, of Waimanalo, died Jan. 21, 2003. Born in Kohala, Hawai'i. Retired as a power plant operator at Fort Shafter; formerly with state deputy sheriff's office. Survived by daughters, Victoria "Bobbi" Kahalewai and Georgilyn; hanai son, Louis Zarko; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Carrie Keli'i, Henrietta Goo, Mary Tim and Edna Ariz; brother, Charles "Sonny." THOMAS MASAKAZU HIGA, 81, of Waipahu, died Jan. 24, 2003. Born in Pearl City. Retired from the U.S. Army; a veteran of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team; also retired as an auto mechanic at Schofield Barracks . Survived by wife, Kiyo; daughter, Amy Makishi; two grandchildren; brother, Edward "Mako"; sisters, Kiyoko Higa and Alice Hansen.
