Former UH kicker Elam will stay with Broncos

Bloomberg News Service

DENVER — Denver Broncos kicker Jason Elam, set to become a free agent at the end of the month, agreed to a five-year contract with the National Football League team.

Elam is a graduate and former standout at the University of Hawai'i.

The Broncos didn't disclose financial terms. Elam's agent, Jack Reale, said the agreement is worth $9 million and includes a $2.68 million signing bonus.

The contract likely will allow Elam, 32, to finish his career with Denver, the only team the 10-year veteran has played for.

"Jason's production speaks for itself, and we wanted to be able to fairly compensate him," Broncos General Manager Ted Sundquist said in a statement.

The Broncos designated Elam, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, as the team's franchise player last February and signed him to a one-year contract worth about $1.4 million.

For his career, Elam has made 261 of 333 field goals and has converted all but two of his 412 extra point tries. He holds the NFL record for consecutive extra points at 371 and shares the league record for the longest field goal made, hitting a 63-yarder in 1998.

Last season, Elam made 26 of 36 field goals and all 42 extra points. With 120 points, he surpassed the 100-point mark for the 10th straight season.
