WINDWARD O'AHU

New Punalu'u bridge proposed

The state wants to replace the highway bridge over Punalu'u Stream with a wider, safer structure estimated to cost $14.5 million.

A temporary bypass road and bridge will be constructed on the beach just makai of the current bridge, according to state environmental notices dated Jan. 23.

The proposed bridge, 19 feet wider than the old one, would be 50 feet wide and 160 feet long, with two lanes, paved shoulders and a shielded sidewalk/bikeway.

Public comment is being sought by Feb. 22.

According to the joint draft environmental assessment, if the proposed replacement of South Punalu'u Bridge is scheduled for dry months, and the stream water and construction area are suitably isolated from the ocean, water-quality impacts to the near-shore environment can be largely avoided.

The project is expected to begin in early 2004 and last 18 months.
