Boxing figures Salud, Lee headline 2003 inductions

Advertiser Staff

Two prominent figures in local boxing, Bobby Lee and Jesus Salud, will be among four inductees to the Hawai'i Sports Hall of Fame and Cybermuseum tonight.

Induction ceremonies will take place at the Honolulu Country Club.

Joining them will be Derek Ho, the 1993 Association of Surfing Professionals champion, and Dr. Jack Scaff, who helped get the Honolulu Marathon off the ground.

Their addition will bring to 90 the number of athletes, pioneers and contributors honored since the hall was started in 1997.

Lee served more than 30 years with the Territorial and, eventually, Hawai'i State Boxing Commission. He was its executive secretary from 1951 through 1977. Lee also held several major world positions, including president of the World Boxing Association from 1972 through 1974. He is currently the WBA's vice president.

Salud won the WBA super bantamweight title in 1989 and fought for five other world titles in a career that included a 63-11 record with 40 knockouts. Salud was 35-1 in Hawai'i.

Ho is a four-time Triple Crown of Surfing winner (1984, '86, '88 and '90). He had nine top 15 finishes.

Scaff was a leading figure in the Honolulu Marathon, helping bring together the Mid Pacific Road Runners Club, the American Medical Joggers Association and others for the first marathon in 1973. Scaff served as chairman of the Honolulu Marathon Association from 1975-76 and president of the association from 1977-80. During his tenure, the race grew from an initial 162 entrants to 7,270, according to the association.

The race has since grown to more than 30,000 to become the world's fourth largest.

Nominations for next year may be made by writing to: Hawai'i Sports Hall of Fame, P.O. Box 30666, Honolulu, HI 96820-0666. Further information is available at www.alohafame.org.
