ABC won a network bidding war to acquire the rights to a documentary on Michael Jackson and has immediately scheduled it for prime time tomorrow night at 7. The documentary, "Living with Michael Jackson," features "unprecedented and exclusive access to Jackson's private life," ABC promised. British journalist Martin Bashir spent eight months with Jackson and was with him when Jackson horrified onlookers by dangling his baby from a hotel balcony in Berlin, the network said.
A male monologue
"The Vagina Monologues," Eve Ensler's feminist play, will feature a male monologue, authorized by the organizers of V-Day, when a University of Hawai'i revival is staged Saturday and Sunday at Leeward Community College. Yokanaan Kearns, a teacher at Hawai'i Pacific University and a noted playwright, wrote a segment from the male perspective. Following Ensler's technique, he interviewed several men but also worked in his own experience and a dream "in which I was a woman and felt vulnerable walking alone."
Actor Jeremy Pippin and student director Reb Beau collaborated to bring Kearns' segment to life. Women actors are part of the production. Information: 440-4664.
Jamming for Marley
In recent years, late reggae legend Bob Marley's birthday has rarely passed without at least a couple of celebrations hosted by Honolulu reggae musicians. This year is no exception. Humble Soul, Butch Helemano, Sean Ka'awa, THC, and a few other local keepers of Marley's musical flame will get together tomorrow (on what would've been the singer's 58th birthday) for the Bob Marley Birthday Jam. Also on hand will be B.E.T., Haile Ras-Tafari and Binghi-T for live performances, and DJ Liloa (of Auntie Pasto's DubWize fame) and KTUH-FM's MC Loriel to throw down some dub. Catch a fiya at 10 p.m., Don Ho's Island Grill at Aloha Tower Marketplace. Cover is $5 (21 and older) and $10 (ages 18-20). Call 528-0807 to learn more.
Correction: The documentary "Living With Michael Jackson" airs at 7 p.m. tomorrow on ABC. The wrong date was given in an item in a previous version of this Left Lane.
