Fatal fall at hotel injures driver

A 50-year-old woman was critically injured yesterday after a man fell or jumped from a Waikiki hotel onto her vehicle on Kuhio Avenue.

The 40-year-old man fell several floors from the Ohana Maile Sky Court at 2058 Kuhio Ave. around 3:30 p.m. onto the white mini-van, said Emergency Medical Services district chief Sue Rauch.

The man and the woman who was in the car were taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where the man was pronounced dead.

The woman was rushed into emergency surgery yesterday afternoon. The hospital would not release any information about her condition, but police said she was in critical condition.

Because of the accident, both east- and west-bound lanes of Kuhio Avenue between Kalaimoku and Namahana streets were shut down for several hours. Traffic was rerouted onto Kalakaua Avenue and Ala Wai.


Suspect in assault commits suicide

A martial arts instructor accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl killed himself Monday, officials said.

The medical examiner's office said Edward Tiffany, 62, of Nanakuli died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Tiffany was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree sex assault and four counts of third-degree sex assault, which police said occurred between Dec. 11, 2002 and Jan. 22.

Tiffany was released Friday after posting $40,000 bail. He was scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow at District Court.


Man struck by car in critical condition

A 41-year-old Big Island man struck by a car Monday evening while crossing Henry Street in Kailua, Kona was brought to Honolulu early yesterday in critical condition and taken to The Queen's Medical Center.


Secret Service hunts for woman

The U.S. Secret Service is seeking to arrest a 28-year-old woman wanted on three warrants, two for forgery and one for a traffic offense.

Christina "Tina" McNeal also is wanted for questioning by federal agents for an ongoing identity-theft investigation. She is described as 5 feet 4 and 90 pounds, with a tan complexion, long black hair and brown eyes.

Suspect information is being accepted by Secret Service Special Agent Glen Peterson at 541-1912 and CrimeStoppers, 955-8300.


Two Big Island hikers found safe

Two men who hadn't been heard from since a Sunday hiking trip on the eastern slope of Mauna Kea were found safe yesterday.

Brian Carvalho and Boss Andre had gone hiking at noon Sunday and were due back at 5 p.m. Monday. The two men and their four dogs were found by fire personnel around 7:30 a.m. walking along a trail near Mana Road in the Keanakolu Cabin area. The men said their vehicle had gotten stuck under tree cover the day before, fire officials said.
