Inspired Mililani in final

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Somewhere, Chezray Hayes probably is smiling.

Pearl City's Kimberly Unten is head and shoulders above 'Aiea's Dana Kagawa. Pearl City and Mililani advanced to the OIA title game.

Eugene Tanner • The Honolulu Advertiser

His classmates and friends on the Mililani High School girls soccer team dedicated their O'ahu Interscholastic Association semifinal game last night to his memory, then went out and raced past visiting Kahuku, 3-0, to advance to Saturday's championship match against Pearl City, a 1-0 winner over 'Aiea.

Hayes, a 17-year-old Mililani senior, died on Jan. 27 after his plane crashed on Moloka'i during his first solo flight from O'ahu to Maui. Services were held at 6:30 last night at St. John Apostle & Evangelist Church in Mililani. The Trojans' game against Kahuku was scheduled for 7.

"A lot of players were torn about what to do," said halfback Liane Tom, one of three senior captains for Mililani. "We decided to attend the visitation, and almost the whole team went. And then we came here."

Fullback Mallory Iha, another senior captain, said Hayes' death affected the whole team and campus in the past week.

"We all knew who he was; some of us were his friends and others were acquaintances," Iha said. "The mood of the whole school changed. Someone put flowers at the lunch table where he ate on campus. It was hard, but our coach told us a good thing before the game. He said Chez passed away doing what he loved best, so he'd probably want us to go out and do what we love. That helped us."

Sophomore Sarah Yoro gave the Trojans (11-0-1) a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute with a short goal off a loose ball in the penalty box. Alysen Ono made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute on a goal off Tom's assist, and Jen Loo scored unassisted in the 75th minute.

"I was worried about their mental state, I didn't know if they would be focused," Mililani coach James Uson said. "Kahuku (8-3-1) is a tough team, they've got good athletes and their size worried me."

The Trojans, however, shut down OIA goal leader Krisha Kai and seemed to draw inspiration from Hayes. The back of their bench was draped with a sign that read, "This game is dedicated to Chezray Hayes," and each player had a message inked on their biceps.

It read: "4 You, Chez."

• PEARL CITY 1, 'AIEA 0: Chante Figueroa scored from 15 yards in the 78th minute to lift the Chargers (11-0-1) past Na Ali'i (10-3-0).

It was just the third goal of the season for Figueroa, who was the OIA West's third-leading goal-scorer last year.

"The ball ricocheted off a couple people and I got it on my right," Figueroa said. "The goalie came out and blocked off the right, so I switched it to my left foot and put it in the bottom right corner of the net."
