BASKETBALL

• Vulcans top HPU: Osadonor Esene scored a game-high 23 points to lead the University of Hawai'i-Hilo to an 83-67 Pacific West Conference men's basketball win over Hawai'i Pacific University last night at Hilo civic.

Leandro Maruoka had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Sea Warriors.

Hilo improved to 13-6 overall and 5-2 in the PacWest, while HPU dipped to 13-6 and 2-5.

• BYUH men ranked No. 20: For the first time in school history, the Brigham Young Hawai'i men's basketball team broke into the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II national rankings at No. 20.

The Seasiders (11-2 overall, 5-1 Pacific West Conference) hold the top spot in the PacWest standings. They are led by NCAA Division II leading scorer Alexus Foyle (26.9 points per game) and all-conference center Scott Salisbury.

The Seasiders joined NCAA Division II at the start of the 1998-99 season. Prior to that, they were ranked nationally in the NAIA.

BYUH plays at Chaminade Friday at 7:30 p.m. and meets Hawai'i Pacific Feb. 12 at the Neal Blaisdell Center. The road swing ends with a pair of games at UH-Hilo Feb. 21 and Feb. 22.

BASEBALL

• HPU schedule change: The Hawai'i Pacific men's baseball season-opening doubleheader against Sonoma State tomorrow has been rescheduled for a single nine-inning game starting at 6 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.

Sonoma State requested the schedule change to accommodate traveling conflicts. Sonoma State is scheduled to arrive late tonight and the coach wanted the players to get adequate rest before tomorrow's game, according to HPU sports information director Jarnett Lono.

The teams are scheduled to play doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.
