Toppled utility pole slows commutes

Commuting was slowed in Kahuku today when an accident that toppled a utility pole and caused wires to sag over Kamehameha Highway forced police to funnel traffic through one lane all morning.

The problem started at about 12:25 a.m. when a truck traveling toward Sunset Beach ran off the highway and struck a pole on the makai side, police said. Police said the driver was taken to Kahuku Hospital. A hospital staffer said the driver, a man in his 20s, was treated and released.

Some of the utility wires crossing the highway near Pualalea Street dipped low enough to snag vehicles, so the road was closed while utility companies were summoned, said Fred Kobashikawa, Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman.

The contraflow lane was set up at 4:10 a.m. The sagging wires turned out to be telephone lines, Kobashikawa said, adding that electric company crews had propped up the lines by 5:30 a.m.

The contraflow continued while crews from both phone and electric utilities worked to reattach the wires to the new pole, he said.

1 of 2 suspects in robbery arrested

Police arrested one of two suspects in a robbery last night near Chinatown.

The two men allegedly confronted a 44-year-old Honolulu resident while he walked at 8:10 p.m. at North Kukui and Maunakea streets.

The victim told police that one man held a rock while the other demanded money. He said he handed money to the rock-wielding man and then both suspects fled.

Police later caught the one who demanded the money.
