Grade schools fared well on SAT

 •  Complete list of schools that made the honor roll

By Jennifer Hiller
Advertiser Education Writer

Most Hawai'i public elementary schools have made the state's honor roll for matching or exceeding the national average on the reading and math portions of the 2002 Stanford Achievement Test, a barometer of academic performance.

Intermediate and high schools didn't fare as well overall, but have made slight gains.

Of the Department of Education's 283 schools, 162 elementary schools, 20 intermediate schools and 12 high schools made the honor roll. (To see if your school is on the list, see below.)

The honor roll is a prelude to today's release of school-by-school test results for the SAT and the new Hawai'i Content and Performance Standards test.

About 55,000 public school students took the tests in April. Each test gives the schools a different set of data. While the SAT compares Hawai'i to the rest of the nation by seeing how well students perform on questions that fall above, below and directly on their grade level, the Hawai'i test sees specifically how well students are doing on what they should have learned so far in school.

"This performance helps dispel the mistaken notion that Hawai'i's public school students cannot meet national standards," said Superintendent Pat Hamamoto.

"There are bountiful examples of excellence in our public schools."

The SAT is designed so that 77 percent of all test-takers nationwide post "average" or "above average" scores.

To make the honor roll, schools had to test at or above the 77 percent level.

The tests were given in Grades 3, 5, 8 and 10.
