Kamehameha wins ILH softball title

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kamehameha coach Ty Sing Chow has the luxury this season of having two aces in Brandi Peiler and Kate Robinson.

In the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship playoff yesterday at Mid-Pacific, Peiler got the call and she didn't disappoint.

Peiler, a right-hander, pitched a four-hitter with no walks and nine strikeouts as the Warriors won a pitchers' duel against Punahou's Sarah Weisskopf, 1-0.

Peiler threw 84 pitches — 64 strikes — faced the minimum through four innings and didn't allow a runner past first base.

"Just a gutty performance, she really wanted it," Sing Chow said. "She pitched a real good game, Sarah pitched a very good game and we're just happy and fortunate to come out on top."

Kamehameha improved to 15-2, while Punahou fell to 14-3.

On Monday, Punahou beat Kamehameha, 2-0, to force yesterday's game. In that contest, Robinson started for Kamehameha against Weisskopf.

"We're fortunate where we can just flip the coin and either one will do well," Sing Chow said of Peiler and Robinson.

Peiler allowed four singles yesterday and benefitted from a flawless defense and catcher Kaulana Gould, who threw out baserunners in the second and sixth innings.

"Kaulana, she knows what she has to do, she gets it done," said Peiler.

Weisskopf allowed only a leadoff single to Liane Horiuchi in the first. She threw 62 pitches — 41 strikes — struck out three and retired her final 15 batters.

Her only walk came back to haunt her in the second.

Sharee Fonoti drew a leadoff walk in the inning, reached second on Nicole Kalakau's sacrifice bunt and took third on a throwing error by second baseman Lindsay Fujita, who covered first on the play and tried to backdoor Fonoti at second. Her throw went into left field, allowing Fonoti to reach third.

Lena Nahale followed with a popup behind second base against a drawn-in infield. Fujita made a sprawling catch, but Fonoti tagged and just beat her throw to the plate.

Both teams had already qualified for the state tournament, but Kamehameha will be the ILH's No. 1 seed and receive an opening-round bye.
