Hubbard captures bodyboard tour finale

Jeff Hubbard of Kaua'i captured The Rockstar Games Pipeline Pro yesterday at the Banzai Pipeline on O'ahu's North Shore.

Hubbard amassed 149.4 points to earn the $6,000 first prize in the fifth and final event of the GOB World Super Tour, which features the top 24 bodyboarders in the world.

South Africa's Andre Botha finished second with 146.8 points and earned $3,000. Australia's Ben Player took third with 143.3 points and won $2,000.

Hawai'i's Alistair Taylor was fourth (139.0 points, $1,600), followed by Brazil's Guilherme Tamega (136.3 points, $1,200) and Hawai'i's Mike Stewart (136.2 points, $800).



WATER POLO

• UH opens Saturday: Michel Roy will debut as the University of Hawai'i coach this weekend when the Rainbow Wahine open their season at the Stanford Invitational.

The eight-team tournament goes all day Saturday and Sunday. Hawai'i, ranked 10th in the preseason Collegiate Coaches' Poll, plays second-ranked UCLA in its first match. The 'Bows also play UC-Santa Cruz Saturday night and third-ranked USC Sunday morning.

Roy came to Hawai'i from the Canadian national program. He has 17 players back from last year, including the top scorers — Chelsea Garner-Prohs and Karin van Hoff. UH went 14-15 last year with 16 underclassmen. Among the new players expected to contribute this season are Australian Kristy Bagnell and Canadian Shannon Carroll.

The Rainbow Wahine play at UC-Irvine (Feb. 21), UCLA (Feb. 22) and UC-Santa Barbara (March 7) before their home opener March 13 against Pacific.
