UH defensive coordinator takes Boston job

Survey: Who would you want to see as the next UH football defensive coordinator?

Kevin Lempa has resigned as defensive coordinator at the University of Hawai'i to accept a job coaching the defensive backs at Boston College.

"I have mixed feelings," Lempa said today. "This is a great place; the people have been nice, and I enjoyed working with the players. But this is a chance to go home. It's time."

Lempa, who grew up on the East Coast, was the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the Western Athletic Conference, earning an estimated $100,000 annually.

A news conference is scheduled for today.

Lempa said his daughter is a junior at UH, adding that she will remain in Hawai'i for her senior year.

Speculation has centered on Rich Miano, who coaches the UH defensive backs, or Saint Louis School athletic director Cal Lee as the possible successor.

Last year, UH tried to create a non-coaching position for Lee on the staff.
