FBI arrests fugitive from Australia

An Australian businessman wanted on a warrant in Queensland, Australia, on charges including fraud and using his business for personal gain, was arrested in Hawai'i Monday by FBI agents.

Lakhmi Gulabrai Daswani, 49, who also goes by the nickname "Lux," was arested at the Honolulu Passport Agency at the federal building.

Daswani was attempting to renew his passport when FBI agents housed in the same building complex arrested him, according to Daniel Dzwilewski, FBI special agent in charge.

FBI agents took Daswani to the federal detention center in Honolulu and are awaiting approval from the Australian government to extradite him.

The Gold Coast Bulletin News in Brisbane, Australia, reported that Daswani had $50 million in debts and that Australian authorities had been on his trail for more than two years.

Man charged in Waikiki stabbing

A 55-year-old homeless man was arraigned in District Court yesterday on a charge of attempted murder in connection with a stabbing last week in Waikiki.

Rudy N. Vinigas was being held on $30,000 bail, accused of stabbing a 46-year-old man several times in the abdomen after the man got out of a parked car at 2:40 a.m. on Jan. 28.

A woman, Vinigas' former girlfriend, also was in the car, which was parked on Ka'iulani Avenue, near Tusitala Street.

Vinigas is accused of hitting the victim on the head and then stabbing him after he got out of the car.

Police found the victim lying on the sidewalk.

Man accused of raping family friend

Police yesterday charged a 42-year-old man in the rape of a woman at her Kailua residence.

Joseph Neary was charged with first-degree sexual assault on suspicion of handcuffing and raping a 47-year-old woman, police said.

The suspect and victim had apparently been family friends for at least 30 years when the man attacked, bound and sexually assaulted the woman on Jan. 27, police said.

The suspect is being held on $50,000 bail.
