Iolani rallies to top Saint Louis, 52-43

By Wes Nakama

A rare fan appearance by the governor drew special attention to last night's high school basketball game between Iolani and Saint Louis, but it was Iolani's "common folk" players who led the Raiders to a 52-43 victory before a crowd of about 1,200 at McCabe Gym.

Gov. Linda Lingle saw standouts Derrick Low and Bobby Nash struggle through a poor shooting night, but Zach Tollefson, Ryan Hirata and Kyle Pape combined for 27 points to help Iolani (11-0) overcome a deficit through the first 2 1/2 periods and hold off the Crusaders (8-3) at the end.

"Those other guys got going, and that's what makes them so good," Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan sad. "You cannot just focus on Nash and Low; they have a lot of good players."

Low had only two points at halftime and Nash just three as the Crusaders took a 24-20 lead. Low picked up his third foul with 4:25 left in the half, and was whistled for his fourth foul with 3:09 left in the third period, again heading to the bench.

Saint Louis had built its lead to 30-23 just after halftime, but Hirata's three-point play and Low 's three straight baskets gave the Raiders a 34-31 advantage.

With Low on the bench, Iolani went on a 10-1 run to lead 44-34. Hirata finished with 11 points, Pape 10 and Tollefson chipped in six, including two backdoor layups in the closing minutes.
