Tonight's Must-See

"Waiting to Exhale" (1995), 6 p.m., Bravo. The good news is that cable channels are serious about Black History Month. They're showing some of the best films in recent decades. The bad news is that they're running them simultaneously. There are other good choices, but try "Exhale," which crackles with author Terry McMillan's caustic wit. Four women, played by Angela Bassett, Whitney Houston, Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine, confront bad behavior by men. They strike back with enlightened rage. It's more fun than it sounds. Director Forest Whitaker used the Southwest settings beautifully and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds assembled some wonderful songs.

Of Note

"The Color of Friendship," 2 & 8 p.m., Disney Channel. When a black congressman agrees to host a South African for the summer, he is surprised to find a bigoted white girl. Based on a true story, it's well told here with Carl Lumbley starring.

"Absolutely Fabulous New York Special," 6 p.m., Comedy Central. The old "Ab Fab" series wonderfully created two women lost in their world of London hype. Now they're transplanted to New York, for Fashion Week.

"A Soldier's Story" (1984), 7 & 11 p.m., History Channel. Charles Fuller's play has been transformed into a powerful look at racial relations at a 1940s Army post.

"Touched by an Angel," 7 p.m., CBS. Leaning toward Valentine's Day, the angels intervene when three couples are having troubles.

"Law & Order," 7 p.m., NBC. A young woman's body is found outside a Chinese diplomat's apartment in this rerun.

"The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), 7 p.m., ABC. Based on a story by Stephen King, Tim Robbins plays a banker who goes to prison and changes himself and others. Morgan Freeman co-stars.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," 8 p.m., NBC. Here's a rerun of the episode in which a priest (Eric Stoltz) becomes a suspect.
