Two girls' records fall in OIA West meet

Advertiser Staff

Barely two months into her freshman season at Kapolei High, Meredith Egloria has already stamped herself as a high-school All-American.

Egloria set a meet record of 24.44 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle yesterday in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division championships at Kalani High School. The time ranks 10th on the current All-American list of the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association. The fastest 100 public school swimmers in each event will be All-Americans.

Radford senior Stella Brinich broke an 18-year-old meet record in the 100 butterfly, even though she was "working through" the meet toward the state finals and not pointing for a fast time yesterday. Brinich's 1:00.22 is 2/10ths of a second faster than the former record of 1:00.42 by Gay Mikasa of 'Aiea in 1985.

Brinich is aiming to improve her personal record of 58.31, set in last year's state championships, and earn a college scholarship.

Leilehua's girls and the boys of Kapolei, which will not have a senior class until next year, won team championships.

Egloria's time was her personal best and fifth best by a Hawai'i girl since 1999, according to HawaiiSwimForum.com. She broke the record of 25.0 set by Tanya Life of Pearl City in 1990.

In the team races, Leilehua's girls outscored Mililani 135 to 127. Their total of 262 points was higher than the other seven teams combined.

Kapolei's senior-less boys edged Mililani 113 to 108 with Leilehua third at 86.

The OIA Eastern Division championships will be held at 2 p.m. today at Kalani.
