UH to host State Farm Women's Volleyball

Hawai'i, Florida, Kansas State and defending national champion USC will compete in the State Farm Women's Volleyball Classic, Aug. 22-23 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators announced the site and field yesterday.

"We are thrilled to have been selected to host this prestigious event and commit to its continuing excellence," said Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano, UH senior woman administrator.

USC won its fifth national championship in New Orleans last season. Hawai'i and Florida also advanced to the final four.

Hawai'i finished 34-2 and lost to Stanford in the national semifinal.

Florida finished the season ranked No. 4 and Kansas State was No. 21.

ARENA FOOTBALL

Tryouts for Islanders: The Hawaiian Islanders have received more than 300 inquiries from across the United States, foreign countries and here regarding tomorrow's open football tryout at Saint Louis School.

The Islanders will open their second season in arenafootball2 on March 30.

Registration will start at 9 a.m., with the tryout at 10 a.m.

A $25 fee will be charged for participating in the tryout. Only cash and money orders will be accepted.

COACHING CLINIC

UH's Morrison featured: University of Hawai'i quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison will be the featured speaker at the Adams USA-Hawai'i Coaching Academy March 14-15 at the Pacific Beach Hotel.

The two-day clinic is $70 by March 5, and $80 after. Fee includes Academy Coaching Manual, Coaching Academy T-Shirt and a nightly pupu reception.

Joining Morrison, who will cover quarterback technique, will be:

  • Raul Lara, Long Beach Poly High School, Calif., Player Conduct and Special Teams.
  • Gary McNabb, Adams USA.
  • George Gusman, Hawai'i Official, Coach-Official Relationships on the Field.

  • Chris Selfo, Tulane University, La., Inside Zone Play and Six-Man Pass Protection.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

HPU sweeps opener: The Hawai'i Pacific women's softball team swept its season-opening doubleheader against Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), 5-2 and 6-0, yesterday at HPU Windward field.

In the first game, HPU senior Kim Fukumoto batted 2-for-3 with two doubles, and senior Kristin Fujii went 2-for-3 with a double and triple.

In the second game, Fukumoto had two doubles and drove in two runs, while senior Tascha Berinobis hit a home run.

Gustavus Adolphus, which competes in NCAA Division III, dropped to 1-4. The Division II Sea Warriors improved to 2-0.

Paradise Classic runs late: With the first three games going to extra innings, host University of Hawai'i played late into the night on the opening day of the Chevron Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hawai'i's game against Louisville started way past the 6 p.m. start, which pushed UH's 8 p.m. game against Oklahoma State even further back.

In the first three games, No. 6 Washington defeated Santa Clara, 3-2, in eight inning; Santa Clara edged Louisville, 6-5, in 11 innings, and Washington came back to beat Oklahoma State, 5-4, in eight inning. All games are scheduled for seven innings.

The tournament continues today with the first of five games starting at noon at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

OLYMPICS

Kono honored: Hawai'i's Tommy Kono, who won two gold medals and a silver at the 1952, '56 and '60 Olympics, will be honored by the U.S. Olympic Committee as it kicks off the 2003 Titan Games.

The Titan Games Night of Champions will be next Friday (Feb. 13), at the San Jose State Events Center. It is the start of the three-day Titan Games combat sporting event.

Seven Olympic greats, including Kono, Evander Holyfield and Dan Gable, will be honored. All represent sports competing in the inaugural Titan Games.

Kono set 26 world records in four weight classes and is known around the world as a pioneer in the sport of weightlifting.

The Titan Games features a "USA versus the World" format in dual and triangular meets. The venue will accommodate four platforms with competition continuous on at least three.

In addition to weightlifting, boxing and wrestling, fencing, shot putters, judo, taekwondo and karate athletes will be matched up with the world's best in each of their respective sports.
