Judge denies Rodrigues' motions
Associated Press
A federal judge has rejected motions from convicted labor leader Gary Rodrigues that he be acquitted and be granted a new trial.
U.S. District Judge David Ezra denied post-trial motions filed by the former United Public Workers state director and his daughter, Robin Haunani Rodrigues Sabatini, who were convicted by a federal court jury on Nov. 19 of 101 counts of mail fraud, health insurance fraud, money laundering and embezzlement.
Rodrigues, who also was convicted of accepting kickbacks, and Sabatini remain free on bail pending sentencing on May 12. Both plan to appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
