HPU splits twinbill with Sonoma State

Hawai'i Pacific's David Zamarano relieved starter Kai Austin with two runners on and two outs in the seventh, and picked off the lead runner at second to earn a save without throwing a pitch as the Sea Warriors beat Sonoma State, 2-1, yesterday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Sonoma State won the second game at Hans L'Orange Park, 6-1.

In the first game, the Sea Warriors scored the go-ahead run in the sixth when Grandon Costa singled in Chase Nakamura with one out.

MEETINGS

• QB Club: Riley Wallace, University of Hawai'i men's basketball coach; Andy Johnson, UH sailing coach; and Joey Estrella, UH-Hilo baseball coach, will be the featured speakers at tomorrow's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant.

The meeting is open to the public with lunch $7.50 for club members and $8 for non-members.



SOFTBALL

• Santa Clara tops UH: Jaime Forman-Lau pitched a five-hitter as Santa Clara beat Hawai'i, 4-1, in the Chevron Paradise Classic yesterday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

UH's game with Washington ended after the deadline for this edition.

Jenny Brown batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Broncos.

Justina Kahaku drove in the Rainbow Wahine's run.

Santa Clara improved to 4-5, while Hawai'i dropped to 2-1.

• HPU sweeps BYUH: Hawai'i Pacific swept a pair of non-conference games against Brigham Young-Hawai'i yesterday, 7-1 and 10-1, at BYUH field in La'ie.

In the first game, HPU's Malia Sullivan pitched a complete game and Kristin Fujii homered to tie the school career record with 10.

The Sea Warriors' Jennifer Baron batted 4-for-4 with a double and triple.

Jessica Parra and Mallory Anderson pitched for HPU in the second game and Baron batted 2-for-3.



WATER POLO

• UH women open with split: The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team lost to No. 2 UCLA and beat UC Santa Cruz yesterday at the Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto, Calif.

In the opener, Natalie Golda scored three goals and Robin Beauregard and Kristina Kunkel added two apiece as the Bruins won, 7-3.

Shannon Carroll, Karin Van Hoff and Miria Whitford scored for the Rainbows.

Danielle Mulford scored four goals and Lesley Merlo added three as Hawai'i beat UC Santa Cruz, 20-3.

UH will face USC today for a spot in the third-place game.
