Honolulu attorney Les Kondo has been appointed director of the Office of Information Practices, the state agency that oversees implementation and administration of the state's open record laws.

In a news release announcing his appointment, Gov. Linda Lingle said, "I have confidence in Les' legal abilities and judgment to ensure that the people of Hawai'i have fair and open access to government records and public information, while protecting the privacy and rights of individuals and organizations. Les will play a key role in our efforts to restore the public's trust in government and to encourage public involvement and input in the democratic process."

A partner with the law firm of Chun & Nagatani, Kondo, 39, is involved in commercial, construction, product defect and insurance coverage litigation and landlord-tenant issues.

He will replace Moya Davenport-Gray, who was dismissed by Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona last week. Gray had been director since 1995.
