THE LEFT LANE
Pessimism reigns in online Valentines

Advertiser staff and news services

Valentine's Day haters, remember, "cupid" rhymes with "stupid."

This pessimistic thought and others can be found as close as the Internet if you're feeling rather blue instead of pink this week.

For the really bitter, there are some pretty tart e-cards, such as Yahoo's anti-love note that shows a woman defending herself against cupid's arrows with a shield, or one on hugkiss.com, which features a picture of a bouquet of dead roses, with the poetic words: "Roses are red/Dead roses are black/Just want you to know/You'll never get me back."

Poking fun at 1950s housewives

QUEENIE
Maybe your love life lacks a little luster. Maybe you just need a good laugh. In your pre-Valentine's Day daze, there is a place to go with your angst: disgruntledhousewife.com.

It irreverently pokes fun at the 1950s-era housewife. It has nostalgic illustrations. And it's darn funny in a PG-13 kind of way.

It has links to "Ask Queenie" (advice for the lovelorn, the sloppy and the dim) as well as a tongue-in-cheek "meals men like" and a Highlights-styled game matching people with their dogs and/or tattoos.

Tiffany planning a romp at Gussie's

TIFFANY
Children: Behave! That's what they still say when former '80s teen queen turned '00s Playboy pin-up Tiffany takes the stage. Tiff never quite made it to Hawai'i when she and rumoured arch-rival Debbie Gibson ruled the Top 40, but she's Gussie L'Amour's-bound Feb. 22, 23, & 24 for shows supporting her 2000 comeback CD "The Color of Silence." The critically lauded disc was called "one of the finest pop albums of 2000" by Billboard Magazine. Honest! Tickets for the 8:30 p.m. shows are available at Gussie's, and Gold Zone in Wahiawa. Prices range from $12 to $20. Call 836-7883 or 622-6928.
