Maui's Cheyne Magnusson won the first event of the inaugural Macy's E-Series last weekend in 2- to 4-foot waves at Ma'ili Point.

Magnusson topped a field that included most of Hawai'i's top up-and-coming professional and amateur surfers, ranging in age from 17 to 28.

Magnusson caught the first wave of the 30-minute final and never relinquished the lead. He earned $1,000 for the victory.

Jonah Morgan of the Big Island was second.

The contest was the first of five in the Macy's E-Series.
