Moped operator in critical condition

A 31-year-old man remained in critical condition yesterday after his moped struck a van on Kilauea Avenue late Monday night.

Police said the moped was headed north on Kilauea when it crashed into a 1973 Volkswagen van that was turning left onto Makapu'u Avenue at about 10:20 p.m.

The 28-year-old driver of the van was not injured, police said. The moped operator, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center.

Holdup witness helps nab suspect

Information from a witness helped police in the arrest of a 37-year-old Kalihi man in connection with yesterday's robbery at the Bank of Hawaii branch at 1950 N. King St.

A robber walked into the bank at 2:30 p.m., handed a demand note to the teller and drove away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police said a witness noted the license-plate number of the car. That information led patrol officers to an address where police found a man matching the robber's description. The suspect was arrested after the witness identified him, police said.

Accused gunman arraigned in attack

A Waikiki man was arraigned yesterday in District Court, charged with attempted murder and reckless endangering in the firing of a handgun at a man after an argument.

An investigation led to the arrest Saturday of Tommy Jenkins, 21, who is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Police said a bullet believed to have come from Jenkins' gun struck a van driven by a Japanese tourist near 1676 Ala Moana. The tourist was not injured.

Police said a .38-caliber shell casing was recovered at the scene and a bullet was retrieved from a door of the van when it stopped at the traffic light at Ala Moana and Hobron Lane.

Correction: Tommy Jenkins was arraigned in District Court yesterday on charges of attempted murder and reckless endangering. The man he is accused of arguing with and firing a gun at was not a tourist and was not driving a van. Police said a bullet believed to have come from Jenkins' gun struck a van driven by a tourist.
