MTV presents 'Cartoon Don'

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Don Ho has been a Waikiki fixture for more than three decades, becoming a cult figure to Gen-X'ers in the process. So when MTV got a pitch for an animated Don Ho cartoon, the music network bit.

Cartoon Don, an animated Don Ho cartoon, will star in an MTV music video.
Ho's MTV debut is an animated music video of "Cartoon Don" — a young, buff version of Ho wearing dark glasses — performing Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey," replete with tiki and tropical images.

The spot was produced by Andy Bumatai, the omedian-turned-filmmaker, who pitched it to both VH-1, which declined, and to MTV.

Dan Boulos of Wiki Wiki Cartoons was the animator. The music video runs 4 minutes, 15 seconds.

Bumatai thinks the concept has legs: Through a company called Bumatai/Ashley Inc., he's developing a series, "Not Your Typical Don Ho Show." For a peek at the cartoon Ho, go to www.andybumatai.com.
