Wie's golf calendar filling up with events

By Ann Miller
Advertiser Staff Writer

Life as a teenager can get hectic. Michelle Wie has found her golf calendar quickly filling since she turned 13.

Wie has accepted an invitation to play in the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship hosted by Nancy Lopez. The $1,350,000 LPGA event will be April 25-27 at Eagle's Landing Country Club in Georgia.

Last week, Wie accepted invitations to play in the LPGA's first major of the year — the Kraft Nabisco Championship — in March, and the ShopRite LGPA Classic in June.

The Golf Channel has also invited her to play in two men's Canadian Tour events this summer.

Wie will be in the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship next month at Pearl Country Club. Last year she finished 13 behind Joe Phengsavath, who won with a score of 2-under-par 286. Wie tied for 43rd at last weekend's Hawai'i Pearl Open.

She also plans to play in the Jennie K. Invitational and Manoa Cup before leaving for the Mainland.

Between golf tournaments and eighth-grade classes at Punahou, Wie posed for the cover page of ESPN Magazine's fifth anniversary issue, which will be out next month. She was one of four female athletes photographed, along with Serena Williams.

College tournaments

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo's tournament ends tomorrow at Waikoloa and UH-Manoa's begins Wednesday at Leilehua Golf Course.

The 18-team John A. Burns Intercollegiate will be played over 54 holes. The four low scores count toward the team total.

The field includes second-ranked UNLV, eighth-ranked Arizona and 16th-ranked New Mexico. San Diego State, No. 45 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, is back to defend its title.

UNLV's Ryan Moore is ranked 12th in the individual index, just behind former Hawai'i High School Champion Jim Seki, a senior at Stanford. Arizona's Ricky Barnes and Chris Nallen are 17th and 18th.
