Hawai'i Pacific, Hilo split baseball doubleheader

Hawai'i Pacific split a baseball doubleheader against Hawai'i-Hilo yesterday — winning the first game, 8-2, and losing the second, 5-3, at Hans L'Orange Park.

In the first game, HPU junior right-hander Matt Paulsen pitched a seven-inning, complete game. He allowed nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

HPU designated hitter Ikaika DuPont batted 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, and the Sea Warriors broke open the game with a five-run first inning. Center fielder Geoffrey Say went 3-for-3 with a double and two stolen bases and first baseman Alika Kuraoka batted 3-for-4 with a double.

In the second game, UH-Hilo designated hitter Casey Oketani batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs and shortstop Kevin Drever also drove in two runs. Brian Ebbs earned the victory, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks. He struck out one. Adam Inaba pitched 2á scoreless innings for the save. For HPU, right fielder Tyler Ward hit a solo home run.

Hawai'i Pacific, which competes as an independent in NCAA Division II, is 2-6. UH-Hilo, a Division I NCAA team, is 3-15.



COLLEGE GOLF

• TCU leads at Waikoloa: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's team is tied for 11th and UH-Manoa tied for 17th after the first round of the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate yesterday at the Waikoloa Beach and Kings' courses on the Big Island.

Texas Chrisitian leads the 25-team field by five strokes at 276. Oklahoma is second at 281, followed by Lamar (Texas) at 283. Hawai'i-Hilo and Manoa are at 291 and 295, respectively.

Baylor's Ryan Baca leads all medallists with a 6-under 66, followed by Adam Rubinson and Adam Meyer of TCU and Mark Hull of Texas Tech at 67.

Hawai'i-Manoa's Matthew Kodama and Hawai'i-Hilo's Michael Kim are tied for 29th with 15 others at an even-par 72.



COLLEGE SOFTBALL

• Rainbow Wahine hit road: The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine will make their first road trip this season and play 11 games, including one against top-ranked UCLA in the three-day, 17-team UNLV Softball Desert Classic starting tomorrow in Las Vegas.

At the tournament, Hawai'i will play Oregon State and Utah tomorrow, then take on No. 1 UCLA and Central Michigan on Saturday. On Sunday, UH will play California. The games will be played at Eller Media Stadium and Stephanie Lynn Craig Park.

Following the tournament, Hawai'i will play Southern Utah and UNLV on Monday. The team will then play doubleheaders at Loyola Marymount on Feb. 19 and UC Riverside on Feb. 20.

Hawai'i (2-3) is coming off the last weekend's Chevron Paradise Classic. Three UH players received all-tournament honors, designated player April Crowell (.385, 3 home runs, 8 RBIs), first baseman Stacey Porter (.500, 3 runs, 3 RBIs) and outfielder Tracie Uchima (.333, 3 runs).
